When light hits glass, not all visible light travels through to the artwork. Instead, 8% of the visible light gets reflected from the glass, creating the light spots on the glass that we call reflections. While glazing is an important part of any frame to protect the work from the environment, it is not always desired because it can create an obstruction at the front of the framed piece.

HOW CAN YOU CHECK IF THE FRAMING HAS BEEN DONE WITH ANTI-REFLECTIVE GLASS?

Anti-reflective glass has a characteristic reflection color, which occurs from light wave manipulation through AR coatings. Anti-reflective glass has a neutral green or blue reflection color that can be seen from an angle. It's characteristic to all anti-reflective glass and you see it on prescription glasses.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ANTI-REFLECTIVE AND NON-GLARE GLASS?

Anti-reflective glass is ultra-smooth, clear glass processed with optical nano coatings that eliminate reflections. The result is smooth glass that's ultra-transparent and easy to clean. Non-glare glass is treated with a 'matte' finish that diffuses light, resulting in decreased glare. However, the etched surface is harder to clean and obscures the details in the framed work.
